When it comes to flying with Etihad Airways, it’s important to understand their baggage policy to avoid any surprises or extra charges. We will walk you through all the important details regarding Etihad’s baggage allowance, carry-on restrictions, checked baggage limits, and additional fees. So, explore everything you need to know about Etihad Airways’ baggage policy.
Etihad Carry-on Allowance
Etihad Airways has a straightforward carry-on allowance that varies depending on the cabin class. In Economy class, passengers are allowed one standard carry-on bag weighing up to 15 pounds (7 kg) free of charge. Business class, First class, and The Residence passengers are allowed two carry-on bags with a combined weight of 26 pounds (12 kg) free of charge. Additionally, all passengers are allowed one personal item such as a laptop bag or handbag.
It’s important to note that there are size restrictions for both personal and standard carry-on items. Personal items must not exceed 15.3 x 9 x 7.5 inches (39 x 23 x 19 cm) and weigh more than 11 pounds (5 kg). Standard carry-on items must not exceed 22 x 14.2 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm).
If you’re traveling with an infant, you are allowed an additional cabin bag up to 11 pounds (5 kg) for free. Etihad also provides a stroller check policy, allowing passengers to check one stroller, carrycot, or car seat free of charge or carry it on board if there is space available.
Etihad Airways Checked Baggage Policy Allowance
Etihad Airways advises passengers to check their baggage allowance using the airline’s baggage calculator, which can be found on their official website. The baggage allowance varies depending on the destination and cabin class.
For flights to/from the U.S. and Canada, Economy class passengers are allowed two checked bags weighing up to 50 pounds (23 kg) each. Business and First class passengers are allowed two checked bags weighing up to 70 pounds (32 kg) each.
For all other routes, the checked baggage allowance depends on the fare type and cabin class. Economy class passengers have different baggage allowances based on their fare type, ranging from no checked allowance for Hand Baggage Fare to 88 pounds (40 kg) for Value fare. Business class passengers have a range of baggage allowances from 77-110 pounds (35-50 kg) depending on the fare type, while First class passengers enjoy a generous allowance of 110 pounds (50 kg) for all fare types.
It’s important to ensure that all checked bags do not exceed the dimensions of 35.4 x 28.3 x 17.7 inches (90 x 72 x 45 cm).
Lap Infant Checked Bag Policy
If you’re traveling with a lap infant, the checked bag policy varies depending on the destination. For flights to/from the U.S. and Canada, you are allowed one checked bag weighing up to 50 pounds (23 kg). For all other destinations, you are allowed one checked bag weighing up to 22 pounds (10 kg).
Excess Baggage Fees
Exceeding baggage limits results in extra fees, varying by route and excess weight.
For flights to/from the Americas (U.S. or Canada) and various destinations in Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, the fee for an additional 23 kg bag is $225, while for an additional 32 kg bag, it is $270. The fees for other regions such as Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Sudan, Indian Subcontinent, Asia, Africa, Australia, Japan/Korea, can range from $250 to $330 depending on the weight and destination.
For other fare types and destinations, excess luggage can be purchased in 2.2-pound (1 kg) increments, and the price is dependent on the route/zone and the weight required.
Prepaying for Baggage
Etihad Airways offers passengers the option to prepay for baggage online or via the mobile app. To prepay, you can log in to the “Manage my Booking” section on the Etihad website and select “Buy baggage & select seats.” Alternatively, you can download and log in to the Etihad Airways app.
Credit Cards That Reimburse Checked Bag Fees
If you anticipate having overweight or oversized checked bags, there are credit cards available that will reimburse you for the fees. Some Capital One cards offer reimbursement for travel expenses, including baggage fees, at a rate of 1 cent per mile. Make sure to check the terms and conditions of your specific credit card for details.
Exclusions and Waivers
Etihad Guest members, the airline’s loyalty program, receive additional benefits when it comes to baggage allowances. Depending on the fare class, Etihad Guest members may be entitled to an additional 50-pound (23 kg) or 70-pound (32 kg) checked bag at no extra cost. This is a great perk for frequent flyers with Etihad Airways.
Additionally, if you’re a golf enthusiast, you’ll be pleased to know that Etihad allows passengers to bring a set of golf clubs weighing up to 33 pounds (15 kg) in addition to their standard baggage allowance at no extra charge. This is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a round of golf at your destination without worrying about additional fees for your clubs.
